Ales Loprais finishes fifth overall in strong competition of factory teams at Dakar

2019-01-18 17:12:03
The Tatra Jamal piloted by Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora reached the finish of the Dakar Rally 2019 with fifth overall rank in the truck category.

The Tatra Jamal piloted by Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora reached the finish of the Dakar Rally 2019 with fifth overall rank in the truck category. Thus the small family team not only overcame all obstacles of the extremely demanding 41st edition of the famous race but also managed to successfully compete with the strong and large factory teams taking part.

The organizers had to confine this edition of Dakar to Peru only. That is why the Rally was shorter in terms of mileages and racing days. And yet most participants speak about a “long” Dakar. That is because the organizers managed to build a route testing the physical and psychic conditions of the participants and their technologies down to the very bottom. Everybody had problems in the course of the ten stages. Only one third of the 41 trucks starting from Lima on 6 January returned to the Peruvian capital eleven days later.

“For me this was perhaps the most difficult Dakar, leaving aside those where we had an accident and withdrew prematurely. As for the demand and performance this was one of the toughest editions. It was kind of return to the past marathon rallying. I think this is what might be beneficial for us in future,” guesses Ales Loprais.

Before the final stage Ales, Ferran and Petr promised to try to attack the interim fourth rank held by Federico Villagra. Although they achieved the second time of the last special stage, which was 112 kilometres long, it was not enough to wipe off the whole deficit. In the finish the Queen, as Ales Loprais nicknames his Tatra, was mere 11 minutes late after the Argentine pilot's Iveco.

“We wanted that a lot, but we needed this Dakar to be a little longer to achieve it. Our destiny is given and we must be glad for where we rank in the end. We are a small family team without factory support and yet we have succeeded among the big factory teams,” reminds the Czech trucker of the fact that the remaining nine ranks in the Top Ten ranking of the final classification were only occupied by factory-supported crews.

“So joy and joy overall and I would mainly like to express my sincere thanks to the boys, the whole team, our families, fans and sponsors, for without them we would never have managed this. Even though we only enjoyed two problem-free stages, they counted for all and filled us with hopes for the future. To try to defeat factory teams is a big challenge and I believe we will successfully continue in that,” concludes Loprais.

Muchas gracias, Perú! Adiós!

Instaforex Loprais Team prepared for final attack

2019-01-17 18:23:57
Before the final stage of the Dakar Rally 2019 the Tatra representing the colours of the Instaforex Loprais Team returned to the fifth interim rank in the truck category, in addition as a member of a triad with only minimum time differences.

Before the final stage of the Dakar Rally 2019 the Tatra representing the colours of the Instaforex Loprais Team returned to the fifth interim rank in the truck category, in addition as a member of a triad with only minimum time differences. The move up the overall ranking was thanks to the fact that the crew of Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora eventually enjoyed a problem-free stage taking place in the surroundings of Pisco, and that despite the high demand of the special stage section.

Ales Loprais had anticipated this for a long time before. He knew that a better racing day would come. And it did, in the demanding last but one Dakar stage. While many Dakar stars, including other categories, score losses on Wednesday, the crew of the Instaforex Loprais Team enjoyed this stage of the legendary race without major disturbance.

“For us eventually a nice stage without any minor or major technical issues, I am pleased with it. We only lost twenty minutes by navigation but today´s stage was extremely demanding from the navigation point of view. Although our power is lower than that of the trucks with automatic gear change we balanced this by technical drive across the dunes,” looks Ales Loprais back to stage nine, adding with a smile: “In one of the final stages we have finally enjoyed the first nice experience of this long and difficult Dakar.“

Although on Thursday the final stage will only include a short speed test of 112 kilometres, it is still Dakar and anything may happen to anybody. Especially this edition is rich in sudden surprises. That is why the view of the interim results before the last stage is very interesting. The fifth-ranking Tatra of the Lopraiscrew loses 17 minutes after the fourth-ranking Argentine pilot Villagra and their advantage against the sixth-ranking pilot of Belarus, Vjazovich, is even less, mere 12 minutes.

On Wednesday evening the team carefully prepared for the short but still grand finals of the 41th edition of the Dakar Rally. As the bivouac stayed in the same place for two nights and the pass to the racing section start and back was not long, the saved time could be devoted to profound care of the “Queen”.  And so it is now prepared for the final mission, like its pilot.

“We will drive up to our maximum, as usual. What is to happen, that will, and what is to be managed, will be managed. There is still a small chance, so why not to try to tackle it,“ promises Ales Loprais.

Loprais' Tatra passes giant dunes with only five engine cylinders working

2019-01-16 17:16:00
The last two days are left before the end of the Dakar Rally 2019. The Czech-Spanish crew consisting of Aleš Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna, Petr Pokora and their Tatra Jamal #507 continue to struggle for the final rank among the top six in the truck category. The people and the truck have covered eight stages, each ever more demanding than the previous ones.

The last two days are left before the end of the Dakar Rally 2019. The Czech-Spanish crew consisting of Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna, Petr Pokora and their Tatra Jamal #507 continue to struggle for the final rank among the top six in the truck category. The people and the truck have covered eight stages, each ever more demanding than the previous ones. But that is Dakar in it its true form of the most famous marathon rally which never gives anything to anybody for free. The Instaforex Loprais Team had to pay a lot of hard work for anything they achieved, including on Tuesday.

The eighth stage of the Dakar Rally took the whole competition fleet from San Juan de Marcona back to Pisco. Its special stage 360 km long was the second longest of the whole race for the car and the truck categories. Its beginning provided racing on quick pistas and its end thrust the crews among the giant dunes of the Ica desert.

“I wanted to donate today's stage to myself as a present. I planned to speed up along the way until the finish and we did indeed at the beginning. The start was fantastic, and we were really good. We flew over the pistas and kept overtaking some of the hot favourites such as Sotnikov or Van Genugten,” describes Ales Loprais the opening part of the special stage.

However, the crew of the Instaforex Loprais Team was not allowed to enjoy the spell of racing in the beautiful dunes to the full.

“At km 180 we heard a strange sound and the engine began to work with five operational cylinders only. The reason was an injector fault,” continues the Czech driver, whose crew dropped from the fifth to the sixth overall after this stage due to the technical problems. “The feeling we had reminded of another truck behind pulling us backwards. We lacked engine power.”

“To drive through the dune sea at all we had to look for paths via various craters, accelerate by spinning around, and a couple of times we had to find a different route. We literally jumped across some of the dunes, and sometimes quite hard, so our whole bodies ache, but we are happy to be back here.”

“I considered for a while whether to go there at all with only four or five cylinders working. Finally we decided to continue and all turned out well in the end. We must be happy with its being as it is and continue.”

The mechanics also continued working. For them Dakar means work late into the night and only minimum time to sleep. These team members, without whom the racing would be impossible, can at least be pleased by the fact that on Wednesday they do not have to travel anywhere for on 16 January the second loop stage is on the agenda. The stage will encircle Pisco and its special stage will be 311 km long. The race trucks will start for it in pairs like in stage five.

Trucks standings after 8th stage:

2. Nikolaev (Kamaz) +26:49

Ales Loprais nearly destroys engine, but keeps fifth place overall

2019-01-15 10:28:57
The crew consisting of Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora and driving their Tatra Jamal - Queen 69 have survived a rerun of dunes around the city of San Juan de Marcona and continues in the battle for a top rank at the Dakar Rally 2019.

The crew consisting of Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora and driving their Tatra Jamal – Queen 69 have survived a rerun of dunes around the city of San Juan de Marcona and continues in the battle for a top rank at the Dakar Rally 2019.

The Monday stage was one of the two loop stages prepared for the final part of the rally. The stage started and ended in San Juan de Marcona with only short liaison sections. But these parts of the route are not so relevant for the Dakar competition. The successes and failures are mainly decided during the specials. The one included in this stage was 331 kilometres long and took the competitors to the same dunes they had covered at the beginning of the rally. The ruts left after the first pass through the dunes some days before increased complexity of the route and confused navigators, and all this was multiplied by the fatigue after the week of intense racing and short night sleeps, fatigue of both people and machines.

Instaforex Loprais Team were pleased before the start of the Monday stage by the deduction of 22 minutes from their overall time, lost by the crew of Tatra #507 on Sunday when they had to wait in a canyon behind stuck vehicles which could not be bypassed in any way.

But then the mathematics was no longer interesting and Ales, Ferran, Petr and their Queen were again fully occupied by racing for the coming hours.

“In the first section we added some loss due to a broken air hose. The truck could not change gears and brake and so we had to stop and repair it,” described Ales Loprais the progress of the day. “Then we lost the exhaust seal and the truck lost some power by that. In connection with one waypoint, situated high up in the dunes, Petr reacted excellently, lifted us in the cab, inclined the truck and dismantled the turbo regulator for the truck to run better. However, the engine began to overheat extremely, so at one moment we nearly destructed the engine, when a lot of smoke began to go out of it and we had to cool a lot.“

The most important thing was to pass through the dunes in the best possible way, not to get stuck and collect all checkpoints on the way.

“This was a hard job for the navigator but we passed it nicely and collected all waypoints. Although I am tired as dog I am happy to be in the finish and to be able to continue in our mission. Today the stage was very nice, I liked it very much after all, now this is Dakar as it should be. The only thing I am not happy with is our time loss,” admits Loprais, whose crew reached the finish of stage seven with the loss of one and three quarters of an hour after the winner of the stage, Gerard De Rooy.

But even that was enough for the Instaforex Loprais Team to defend the fifth place in the overall standings.

On Tuesday 15 January the rally will move to Pisco. Stage eight is 575 kilometres long and includes 360 km long special stage. The race will again, for a second time in the course of this edition, return to the Ica dunes.

Trucks standings after 7th stage:

1. Nikolaev (Kamaz) 29:50:35

2. Sotnikov (Kamaz) +32:54

3. De Rooy (Iveco) +1:15:28

4. Villagra (Iveco) +4:15:15

Ales Loprais manages rough entry to the second half of Dakar

2019-01-14 20:40:51
Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora and their Tatra Jamal - Queen 69 in the colours of the InstaForex Loprais Team managed together the so far worst stage of the Dakar Rally 2019, but even worse is probably still to come. For Monday the organizers promise the real Dakar hell.

Ales Loprais, Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora and their Tatra Jamal – Queen 69 in the colours of the InstaForex Loprais Team managed together the so far worst stage of the Dakar Rally 2019, but even worse is probably still to come. For Monday the organizers promise the real Dakar hell.

Despite two punctures the Czech-Spanish crew holds sixth place in the general standings in the truck category after the stage from Arequipa to San Juan de Marcona, with the loss of 23 and a half minutes after the fourth rank. Wiping off a deficit of mere 48 seconds would move the crew up to rank five.

The organizers of the Dakar Rally prove that a single country is able to prepare a race that will long be remembered by its participants. They will not forget for example about the Sunday stage from Arequipa to San Juan de Marcona, where the trucks had to cover a special stage that was 309 kilometres long plus another 500 exhausting kilometres of the liaison sections from the last and to the next bivouac.

After a very early wake-up alarm all participants faced an extremely long and demanding day. The route of the special stage passed through four dune fields. Immediately after its start the competing trucks entered the Tanaka dunes, advised to be one of the most demanding sections of the whole 41st edition of the famous marathon rally. Then followed Acari dunes, already forming part of stage three this year, but in their different part. And towards the end of the stage there were still the Duna Grande and Duna Argentina areas. Their pass was said to be much easier than in the case of the Tanaka dunes, but the already exhausted crews saw even this section as no walk through a rose garden.

“This was certainly one of the more difficult stages,” said Ales Loprais. “Unfortunately, we had two punctures and one time the tyre change took a long time for it had to be completed in a demanding terrain where even the truck slide threatened at one moment. Finally we managed it, only the mechanic Petr Pokora lightly injured his hand. But he is otherwise health and full of strength, like the rest of the crew. We believe that our happy, problem-free and positive days will come. Beginning from tomorrow!”

The Monday special stage will be still a little longer (323 km) and even much more tricky, according to the organizers, but the crews will start it from San Juan de Marcona where they will return again in the evening, which means little time spent on the liaison sections (64 km).

Truck standings after the 6th stage:

1. Nikolaev (Kamaz) 24:28:33

2. Sotnikov (Kamaz) +10:13

3. De Rooy (Iveco) +1:50:03

4. Villagra (Iveco) +4:06:48

5. Van Genugten (Iveco) +4:29:30

6. Loprais (Tatra) +4:30:18
