Wonder of biofuel (Part 1)

Before we start discussing the idea of using biofuel for modern cars, let us remind you that the concept of “green” fuel energy has already been presented in numerous books, movies, and even cartoons. In a funny Russian book for kids created in the middle of XX century, one of the chapters describes the hero driving a car that runs on lemonade. Reading this fiction, people used to laugh, though approving of this smart invention. However, in our time a fairy tale is turning into reality. Indeed, engineers have designed cars, which should be filled not with lemonade, but with other organic fuel such as rapeseed oil, ethanol, or vegetable fat.

The use of biofuel has become a major issue on the back of severe pollution of the atmosphere. Indeed, petrol has been used to get energy through a process of carbon fixation accompanied by exhaust gas formation. Nowadays, petrol is being replaced by environmentally friendly technologies. In the EU countries, drivers have been using biofuel to fill their private cars since 2009. Germany, France, and Italy were at the forefront of biofuel production 12 years ago. Any hydrocarbon fuel that is produced from organic matter is considered biofuel. Raw material for this alternative fuel is biomass such as rapeseed oil (the main raw material in the EU), soybean oil, peanut oil, palm oil, spent sunflower seed and olive oil, and animal fats.

However, science is gradually advancing. Apart from biodiesel for cars, other highly promising technologies are being developed. One of them is alternative energy and its division, bioenergy. This branch deals with methods of getting energy from wastes and discovers unknown kinds of fuel. In bioenergy, any hydrocarbon fuel that is produced from biomass is considered a renewable biofuel. Biomass is any organic matter such as construction garbage, refuse from paper factories as well as naturally generated methane. Scientists around the world are involved in the research on how biomass can be converted into biofuel.

Four years ago, American biochemical engineers Harvey Blanch and Douglas Clark perfected the technology of bacterial fermentation of vegetable raw material, which is used to produce biofuel. Such raw materials could be stalks of sugar cane, grass, corn starch, and wastes from pulp production. This technology is expected to be rolled out by 2020. Many scientists think by that time biofuel will become a boon for manufacturers being able to compete with oil. Some analysts share this optimistic outlook.

Two years ago, experts from BP, the British supermajor oil and gas corporation, presented a forecast for global energy development until 2035. According to their estimates, the shares of conventional fossil fuel, namely oil, natural gas, and coal will account for 27% each in the available global energy resources. Nuclear energy, hydro energy, and renewable energy will fall into the remaining 19%. Demand for oil will be very low of 0.8% maximum per year.

Many economists foresee bright future of biofuel and renewable energy resources. These types of energy are to thrive unlike conventional energy. Specialists estimate biofuel production will accelerate by 6.4% annually. In global energy production, the share of renewable sources will expand to 14% from 5%. To sum up, commodity strategists consider both biofuel and renewable energy resources to be efficient instruments for traders.
