James Patterson tops the list of richest authors with the earnings of $95 million. Patterson writes mostly detectives and thrillers. He is largely known for his Alex Cross series, four novels about Michael Bennett, and eleven novels in the Women's Murder Club series.

Another author, Jeffrey "Jeff" Kinney, earned $19.5 million and took the second place in the list. He is a cartoonist and author of children's books. His most-known work is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which was adapted into the namesake film series.
JK Rowling
The third place is taken by Joanne Rowling with $19 million. She enjoyed overwhelming popularity thanks to her book series about Harry Potter. Books were screened, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies.
John Grisham
John Grisham with $18 million takes the fourth place. His legal thrillers made him famous. His novels A Time to Kill, The Firm, and The Pelican Brief were adapted into films. Grisham's books are translated into 42 languages.
Stephen King
Famous horror author Stephen King amassed $15 million and entered the list at the fifth place. He writes horror, supernatural fiction, dark fantasy, suspense, thriller etc. His books sold over 350 million copies and most of them were screened. King has published 54 novels and six non-fiction books.
Danielle Steel
Danielle Steel with $15 million holds the sixth place. Quite a number of her romance novels became bestsellers. Her books sold over 510 million copies; and 23 novels were adapted for the screen.
Nora Roberts
The seventh place in the world's highest paid authors 2016 lists is taken by Nora Roberts with $15 million. She mainly writes suspense and romance novels that sold over 215 million copies.
EL James
Erika James earned $14 million and occupied the eighth position in the rating. Her Fifty Shades erotic series earned her unbelievable popularity. In 2015, the Fifty Shades of Grey hit the screens.
Veronica Roth
The ninth wealthiest author of 2016 is Veronica Roth with $10 million. She is an American novelist and short story writer best known for her Divergent trilogy. All three novels were adapted for film.
John Green
Rounding out the top ten is John Green with $10 million. He is famous for his young-adult fiction. His most-known works include The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and Paper Towns.
