UK Private Sector Employment Continues To Decline: Survey

Employment in the British private sector declined further in July, though at a slower rate, data from the survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG showed Wednesday.

Data from the survey showed that there were further reductions in both permanent and short-term staff appointments in private sector firms in July, but the rates of decrease were weaker than those in the previous month.

The number of vacancies available to job-seekers increased at a slower pace in July, and the rate of improvement was the least marked for six months.

At the same time, the availability of staff continued to rise, with both permanent and temporary/contract staff availability recording notable growth.

"After so much debate surrounding employment prospects across public services there is, at least, some good news with higher demand across private businesses offsetting the slowdown in public sector recruitment," Bernard Brown, Partner and Head of Business Services at KPMG, said. "Yet, the real story of recovery will also probably only start to emerge in the autumn as the true impact of the Olympics begins to emerge."
