Greek Current Account Deficit Narrows In April

Greece's current account deficit decreased significantly from last year in April, helped by a notable improvement in foreign trade, data released by the Bank of Greece showed Friday.

The current account deficit fell to EUR912.2 million in April from EUR2.225 billion in the same month last year. In the January-April period, the balance was a deficit of EUR5.637 billion.

The goods trade account showed a deficit of EUR1.455 billion during the month, lower than the EUR2.262 billion shortfall seen a year earlier. The services account, meanwhile, showed a surplus of EUR762.2 million in April, up from last year's deficit of EUR598.5 million.

The balance in the income account was a deficit of EUR103.1 million, narrower than the EUR544.7 million shortfall recorded in April 2011. The deficit in the current transfers account widened to EUR116.6 million in April from EUR16.6 million a year earlier.
