The dollar was mixed Wednesday morning in New York amid lingering concerns about the pace of the global economic recovery.
Lower-yielding currencies like the dollar and yen have strengthened at the expense of the euro and sterling over the past few months.
Sovereign debt problems in Greece and other EU member states have raised questions about the long-term viability of the euro, while anemic growth figures from the UK have weighed heavily on the sterling.
The buck continued in run of choppy dealing versus the euro, easing back to 1.3600. Earlier this month, the buck hit a 9-month high of 1.3434, but has not been within a penny of that mark in more than a week.
On the flip side, the dollar was strong versus the sterling this morning, supported by discouraging industrial production data from the UK. The buck held near 1.4950, within 2 cents of last week's 9-month high of 1.4782.
The dollar bounced back and forth around the Y90 mark versus its Japanese counterpart, with both currencies competing for favored safe haven status.
With commodity prices remaining elevated, the dollar stayed under pressure versus the loonie. The pair held near C$1.0250, having moved closer to parity over the past few months.
OPEC said Wednesday that global oil demand will rise more quickly than expected in 2010, giving petro-linked currencies a lift.
The Commerce Department will release its wholesale inventories report for January at 10.00 a.m. ET. Economists expect wholesale inventories at the end of January to show a marginal increase of 0.2%.
In economic news from around the world, industrial production in the U.K. registered an unexpected decline at the start of the year, showing the first monthly fall since August 2009.
Overall industrial production fell 0.4% in January from the prior month, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday.
Germany's Federal Statistical Office said in a report that the consumer price index or CPI rose 0.6% year-on-year in February, slower than the 0.8% growth in the previous month.
