Rosneft discovers oil field in eastern Arctic

Russia’s Rosneft announced it discovered an oil field in the Khatanga Bay of the Laptev Sea in eastern Arctic. According to the company’s press release, during the drilling of the Tsentralno-Olginskaya-1 well from the shore of the Khara-Tumus Peninsula on the shelf of the Khatanga Bay of the Laptev Sea, three core samples were taken from depths of 2305 to 2363 meters, which showed high oil saturation dominated with light oily fractions.

Based on the primary studies, it can be concluded that a new oil field has been discovered. Currently, core sampling continues. Hydrocarbon saturation of the core samples proved the geological model developed by Rosneft experts.

Earlier, Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin told that the resource potential of the Laptev Sea alone is estimated at 9.5 billion tonnes of oil equivalent.

Rosneft’s seismic studies of the Laptev Sea revealed the existence of 114 promising oil and gas-bearing structures, while only 28 had been expected.
