Puerto Rico wants to join United States

At the recent referendum in Puerto Rico, the overwhelming majority of voters, that is 97 percent, supported joining the United States.
According to the information on the website of Puerto Rico government, "the option of formally joining the US as a fully fledged state was backed by 97.2% of those who cast their ballots (that is more than 480 thousand people). By contrast, full independence with the US was supported by 1.5% and keeping the colonial status quo just 1.3%."
The voter turnout was only 23% of the 2.2 million registered citizens. The reason for such a low political activity was the appeal for boycotting the referendum by opposition parties. Ricardo Rossello, the current Governor of Puerto Rico, has called up the people to support the status of the island as the 51st US state.
The referendum coincided with the 100th anniversary of the United States granting US citizenship to Puerto Ricans. However, they are barred from voting in presidential elections, and have only one congressional representative with limited voting power.
Nonetheless, it is the Congress that decides the status of Puerto Rico after the statehood vote. Recently, Puerto Rico has been experiencing serious economic turmoil, moreover, the government debt is $73 billion.
