US to impose new sanctions on Russia

On Monday, US senators reached an agreement on legislation imposing new sanctions on Russia and preventing the White House from easing sanctions without congressional approval.

The initiative will come as an amendment to the bill on the introduction of new sanctions against Iran and five other world powers, including Russia. The measure is aimed at punishing Russia for US election meddling, annexation of Crimea and the support of the Syrian government.

Congress will consider the legislation imposing sanctions on Iran this week.

The amendment includes the introduction of fresh sanctions against the Russians blamed for violating human rights, supplying arms to the Syrian government and carrying out cyber attacks in the interests of the Kremlin. Imposing new sanctions against Russian mining, metal, transportation and railway companies is also possible.

Experts believe the amendment will be supported by both Republicans and Democrats. However, to come into force, it must be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by President Donald Trump. Supporters of the initiative are confident they will get enough support in Congress in case the president vetoes the bill.
