Merkel calls for Europe to 'take fate into our own hands'

Speaking at Bavaria in the pre-election meeting after returning from the G7 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Europe can no longer rely on others and should take its future in its own hands.

“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands — naturally in friendship with the United States of America, in friendship with Great Britain, as good neighbors with whoever, also with Russia and other countries,” she said.

During the G7 summit in Italy, the countries reached no consensus on the Paris accord. There are also disagreements on international trade.

According to Merkel, the discussion was very difficult, with a situation of six against one, meaning there was no sign of whether the US will remain in the Paris accord or not.

US President Donald Trump, in contrast to his counterparts, considers global warming a "hoax." He wrote on his Twitter page that he would decide whether to withdraw from the Paris climate accord in the coming days.

Earlier, during his first foreign tour as US president, Trump criticized NATO members for not fulfilling the terms of the treaty and not devoting 2% of GDP to defense.
