China asks US for 100-day delay to sanctions on North Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly asked his US counterpart Donald Trump to put off any specific action against North Korea for 100 days so that Beijing can strengthen sanctions. Citing sources, Japanese Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported that China would use its influence on Pyongyang during this period to achieve maximum easing of the aggressive policy of North Korea.

According to the newspaper, the deal was reportedly discussed at the official meeting of Xi Jinping and Donald Trump last month. During the meeting, Trump reiterated that China accounts for 90% of North Korea’s foreign trade.

According to Donald Trump, China has great influence on the country, and it is up to Beijing to decide whether to help the US with North Korea, or not. “If they do, that will be very good for China, and if they do not, it will not be good for anyone,” he said.

But he made clear that he would deal with North Korea with or without China’s help.

The move comes after Pyongyang’s two launches of ballistic missiles.
