Great Britain continues to inject new money into circulation. Recently, a new 5-pound note on a special polymer film has been printed. Plastic 10-pound notes are to be printed next. If someone thought that only paper banknotes are to be replaced by plastic bills they would be mistaken, as serious changes in a coin design will follow soon.
The pound sterling is the first coin that got a brand new design and the best counterfeit protection. A new £1 coin bears a lot of remarkable features.

Interestingly, a 12-sided coin is made of two different metals. The outer ring is gold colored (nickel-brass) and the inner ring is silver colored (nickel-plated alloy). In addition, the coin has an image like a hologram that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number '1' when the coin is seen from different angles.

In fact, coins became the first centralized means of payment. Coinage was invented long before the technology of printing banknotes. Now numismatists appreciate a truly precious gift, a 12-sided £1 coin. The Royal Mint has already announced the release of a new coin.
