EU last stand or its chief defenders

Ahead of a series of parliamentary elections in a number of European countries, the meeting of the head of the European Central Bank and the German Chancellor draws particular attention. Last year the European Union had experienced several major shocks, including Brexit and the Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election in the United States. And this year may become even more eventful.

The results of the elections in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy can be quite surprising. That is why the meeting of Angela Merkel and Mario Draghi has been called "special." Germany and the ECB were sharply criticized by the US and regional neighbours, moreover, in the EU the number of those who would like to hold a similar referendum as the one in the UK is growing. At the same time, it is Germany and the ECB who are acting as the chief defenders of the European Union. And whereas members of Parliament are elected by citizens, the non-elected officials of the ECB turn out to be the only constant defenders of the EU, while the leaders of the eurozone countries are compelled to participate actively in political rivalries in their countries. The good thing is that the ECB has more powers as a result of helping several European countries to cope with the economic crisis in recent years. It is quite useful if you have become the last line of defense for the euro zone and the single currency. It should be reminded Mario Draghi has repeatedly called for the closer integration between eurozone countries and he continues to insist on that.
