NF leader Le Pen calls on France to leave euro

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right National Front party and a presidential nominee, is trying to attract more voters with loud statements. The party is well-known for populist ideas and anti-EU stance. One of her bald election pledges is that France should leave the euro area. With this determined effort, the politician aims to tackle the problem of the public debt. After the euro is abandoned, the “credit” is to be denominated in a national currency.

In the interview to Reuters, Marine Le Pen suggested that Europe could return to a basket of recognized national currencies like a previous common currency system called the Ecu. It was used before the introduction of the single European currency in 1999. So France could reintroduce the old currency, the French franc. Her argument against the euro is that the shared currency has hindered the economies inside the euro bloc. She noted that more and more people realize the adverse impact of the euro.

French nationals will elect their new president in April and May 2017. Political experts predict that the main presidential race will be shared between conservative candidate Francois Fillon, who decisively won the centre-right nomination in November's primary vote, and Ms Le Pen from the National Front in the second round of voting. This forecast is based on current polls. So the far-right leader has already won favor with numerous citizens.
