Olympic victors awarded cheaper medals

The Olympic gold gets cheaper with every Olympic Games. The value of gold medals of Rio 2016 is 12 percent lower than of those at London 2012. MarketWatch compared sets of medals of the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics in detail. The new medals are the heaviest ever made for any Olympiad as they gained weight to 500 grams, only partially compensating a loss in value. The lower value is linked to a fall in gold prices. Since London 2012, gold and silver sank by 17 percent and 28 percent in value, respectively. As a result, the gold medal price slid to 601 dollars from 677 dollars. The gold medal of Rio 2016 consists of 494 grams of silver and 6 grams of gold. In 2012, the golden talisman was made up of 381 grams of silver and 5.5 grams of gold.
