Switzerland cancels dormant application to join EU

The European Union seems to be falling apart. One of the world’s largest unions is going through rough times. A common opinion cannot be reached on many topics due to constant disagreements. Such uncertainty and corresponding problems began to prevail over advantages given by the EU membership. Current members start looking around for a stronger ally or even consider a solitary position.

Britain is getting ready for a referendum on its further presence in the EU. The event attracted global attention, which is not surprising. Indeed, if Brexit takes place, it will be the first such case ever. Current members think out the British anti-EU campaign and those willing to enter the EU took a break. Perhaps, that is why Switzerland changed its mind about joining the union. The country’s authorities cancelled the application that was under consideration for 24 years. The decision was made at the government level being approved by the upper house of the Swiss parliament. Twenty-seven officials voted for application withdrawal, while only 13 senators were against it. Back in 1992, around 50.3% of the Swiss voted against joining the European Economic Area.

According to different opinion polls, the Swiss nation does not like changes. For example, recently there was a vote on a proposal that would guarantee a monthly basic income for all citizens regardless of their employment. Still, the Swiss rejected it.
