EU agrees €3 bn action plan with Turkey to stem migrant crisis

The nonstop stream of refugees makes the EU authorities increase spending on social programs. However, welcoming migrants, the locals of European towns have encountered lots of unexpected problems. So the migrant crisis has become a major headache and costly affair for the Eurocrats.

At the end of 2015, EU leaders offered Ankara €3 billion in financial aid to clamp down on the flow of migrants to Europe. Turkey is the main launching point for more than 600,000 migrants, who fled to Europe from the Middle East and North Africa last year. However, recently Turkey promised to stem the flow of refugees raising a cost of the deal to €5 billion. An EU diplomat noted on condition of anonymity that the EU is still planning to allocate the same aid money as agreed initially. Meanwhile, EU policymakers acknowledged Turkey’s positive contribution to the migrant crisis. "We cannot organize or stem the refugee movements without working with Turkey," confirmed Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel.

European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said the EU is "a long way from being satisfied" with the effort from Ankara so far, especially after offering €3 billion in aid and political concessions. "There is still a lot of work to do there," said Timmermans, who plans to have talks in Ankara to discuss how the EU aid can be used there to deal with the refugee crisis. Turkey is expected to tighten border security and keep more refugees on its territory.
