Sanctions against Russia may be lifted

The West is hinting at the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed against Russia. The international situation is rapidly deteriorating forcing the global community to review its current stance on Russia. Recently, clear signs are detected that the rapprochement process has been already launched with several mutually beneficial agreements reached. Germany and France were the first to raise a question about an end to sanctions against Russia.

The same thought was later expressed by John Kerry. The US State Secretary said during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that in the coming months anti-Russian sanctions could be lifted if Moscow implements its obligations under the Minsk agreement concerning Ukraine. “And I believe that with effort and with legitimate intent to solve the problem on both sides it is possible in these next months to find those Minsk <…> agreements implemented and to get to a place where sanctions can be appropriately, because of the full implementation, <..> removed,” Kerry made a comment.

The German Finance Minister stated that the European Union should “develop a joint strategy with Russia” to stop the civil war in Syria. French Finance Minister Emmanuel Macron hinted earlier that his country would support an end to sanctions as early as that summer. However, Russia needs to do something for this, for example it should live up to the Minsk agreement and cooperate on reducing tension in Ukraine and Syria. Then the US will abandon some of the anti-Russian sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin in his turn noted that anything that was missing in the implementation of the Minsk Agreement was – without any exception – up to Kiev. The constitutional reform should have given autonomy to eastern Ukraine and should have been adopted by the end of 2015. This has not happened, and the year is over. So, we have to hope for the best and wait for lifting of sanctions anytime soon.
