Canada’s inflation slows to 1.6% in March

According to Statistics Canada, the country’s annual inflation rate slowed in March to 1.6% after hitting 2% in February. On a month-over-month basis, the consumer price index (CPI) edged up by 0.2% in March. Meanwhile, analysts had expected annual inflation to come in at 1.8% and the monthly consumer prices growth to be at 0.4%.

Excluding food and energy prices, Canada’s consumer price index rose by 1.7% year-on-year after a 2% increase in February.

In March, food prices increased by 0.1% on a monthly basis and fell by 1.9% annually. Property prices advanced by 0.1% on month and posted a 2.2% increase annually. Transport costs decreased by 0.6% in the month and rose by 4.6% year-over-year. Clothing and footwear prices for the past month went up by 2.4% and fell by 0.9% on an annualized basis.
