Philadelphia Fed's president expects three rate hikes

Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Patrick Harker said he thinks that the Fed would raise interest rates three times in 2017 as the US economy is ready for sustainable growth.

According to Harker, the rate hike is bound to happen, especially after the victory of Donald Trump. He also said that inflation expectations begin to rally and the labor market is "more or less at full health."

In particular, the jobless rate hit the 9-year low of 4.6%, the lowest level since August 2007.

In the meantime, Atlanta Federal Reserve president Dennis Lockhart and James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank are of different opinion about the number of rate hikes in 2017.

Bullard said that the Fed is likely to raise rates only once, while Lockhart expects two hikes. However, Charles Evans, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago agrees with Harker, expecting that the Fed will raise rates three times.

Previously, the Fed lowered its estimate for the unemployment rate to 4.5% from 4.6%. The regulator also hiked its real GDP forecast for 2017 to 2.1% from 2.0%.
