In addition to two neighbouring countries, the United States of America and China also participate in the discussion.

The parties met to discuss the optimal conditions for starting negotiations with the Taliban's groups in order to convince them to renounce the use of violance as an instrument of attaining political goals thanks to a dialogue.

The Taliban's increased activity of the last several years in Afghanistan alarmed the regional and international community. The coming spring may lead to the bloodshed and instability in the war-torn country.

Within the opening of negotiations, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif Sartaj Aziz addressed the parties. He noted that the meeting in Islamabad should determine the overall process of reconciliation in Afghanistan. Besides, the politician considers that it is necessary to formulate the goals and issues, the achievement of which allows to create favourable conditions for the direct negotiations between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban groups.

The negotiating parties lay hopes on the fact that Pakistan will be able to affect the Taliban, however its relations with Afghanistan have recently worsened significantly. For a long time the countries have accused each other of supporting the Taliban and other militants. There are also suggestions that the movement leaders have settled in the cities of Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan.

Analysts fear that despite the marginal improvement of the relations between Kabul and Islamabad, the constructive peace negotiations may begin not earlier than in a few months. The Taliban's demands mainly relate to the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country.

To date, there are about 13 thousand US military members and NATO in Afghanistan, the main purpose of stay of which is traning of the local security forces.
